Mike had a good guest post on Kevin’s blog about making shit happen that I thought was spot on when it comes to this industry. You eventually get to a point where you know enough to make it happen. It’s just a matter of doing it. I’ve been to a lot of seo conferences, social media conferences, super expensive small conferences, and of course poker conferences. One thing that I’ve come away with every time is exactly what Mike was talking about. You just need to do it, now. Sitting around and talking shop all day isn’t going to make you any money in the end.
As you can see my old domain is redirecting to this one. I made this change because I am going to start writing posts again and I figured I might as well do it on my site instead of my old blog. So if you have a blog and it used to link to my old site, feel free to update the link. As you can see I have kept everyone in the blogroll who was on the old one. I know half of you haven’t updated your blogs in months, but neither have I so I’ve kept you all up.
So what have I been up to?
I’ve really just been working on this site. I’ve pretty much let every other project go stale because this is the one that means the most to me and in my eyes it’s the only one worth pursuing. As you can see at Mike’s Blog , we recently went to a search conference in Tampa. While it was fun, we both pretty much agree that what we do is much different than what “they” do. We go to learn, they go because their trip is paid for and their boss told them. I’m pretty much burnt out on conferences. It boils down to this: If I want to get bombed and stay out until 6am, I can do that in my own town and not pay thousands of dollars to go do it in eastern Europe. I have the knowledge and tools I need to make things work, it’s just a matter of sitting down and doing it.
Some of what I’ve been up to consists of building up the strategy section and posting kick ass infographics like this and this. So keep checking back here, I’ve got a few more REALLY kick ass infographics coming up that your are gonna want to link to.
Three betting pre flop is an essential element in aggressive poker. Without some occasional three bets, the fearless players at your table are going to steal your stack, one hand at a time. To some people, poker is a game where a few big hands determine whether they win or lose. For consistent winners, however, poker is a long term game where the small pots help to form the majority of their total earnings.
If you are able to earn just $1 per hand, you are going to make a lot more money than someone who wins a single $100 pot in 200 hands. Small pots really add up over time, and three betting can aid in your non showdown winnings. There are two primary purposes for three betting, and both should be utilized. Three betting is most common when someone holds a strong hand. This is the most obvious reason, as a strong hand typically warrant a re raise. The second reason for three betting is much more tricky.
So you’re going to Vegas… let’s just say you’re a Vegas Veteran (that’s anybody who has been there at least once). You have a feel for the place, and this time you want to gamble a little smarter. You’re not going to fall for the bright lights and free drinks this time. You’ll have more money to gamble with if you pay more attention to all the nickel and diming going on around you. Believe me, it adds up.
CASINOS ARE HOPING YOU’RE NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO THIS
PAYBACK—Casinos often advertise that their slot machines pay out a very high percentage of the money they take in, 95% payback being a common claim. These numbers can be misleading. Advertising 95% doesn’t mean that all the casino slot machines are paying out at that level all the time. It’s true that each slot is programmed to return a percentage of the money players feed into it—anywhere from 83 to 99% over a long period of time, says Jeffery Compton, a gaming analyst at Compton Dancer Consulting—but not all pay out the same percentage. So at any given point, some machines pay out nothing while others pay out much of their intake. To arrive at the 95% figure, casino management simply limits the scope of its claim to a subset of slots machines that will deliver a 95% payout. So don’t be fooled by the casino’s marketing efforts. If you feed $100 into a slot machine on any given day, there is no guarantee that you will get $95 back on that day or ever for that matter.
Generally speaking, a bluff catcher references a hand that can only beat a complete bluff. Beyond this, bluff catchers are typically mentioned in reference to a situation where a call is seldom going to find a bluff. Sometimes, however, bluff catchers make perfect sense. Making huge calls with bluff catchers, on a regular basis, is not a winning strategy. If, however, you can find occasional spots where you can pick up a small pot with a bluff catcher, your options should be considered. Picking off a bluff comes down to a player’s ability to put their opponent on a defined range. Now, this is much easier said than done. If you have someone on a certain hand or range of hands, you should also know why.
The logic behind a decision is often more important than the decision itself. You can make a sound decision and be completely incorrect, it is going to happen. You can also make poor decisions and win a pot, but it doesn’t mean you played a hand correctly. Results oriented players have both positive and negative side effects. One on hand, a results oriented player is able to determine which plays are winning and which plays are losing. On the other hand, however, they are also likely to incorrectly determine why they won, or even if they should have won. In the end, there is no substitute for lucid thinking in poker.
