House Makes History With Vote on Online Gambling Bill HR 2267
written by: James Comments: 1
For this first time in American history today, Congress has turned in a positive vote on a bill concerning regulation and licensure of online gambling, including online poker. In fact, today marks the first time that a federal decision making body has ruled in favor of online gambling regulation. Barney Frank’s bill was substantially supported by Democrats in the House Financial Services Committee – who voted 34-4 in favor of the passage of the bill. Republicans were nowhere near as supportive with a 7-18 vote. With this vote, there is an indication that the road to licensed and regulated online poker is ready to be traveled. However, there is still a great deal of work to be done before Congress will approve the bill for law.
There were a total of 14 amendments attached to the bill that outlined the new rules for online gambling – if a law were to be made in favor of online gambling regulation. Most amendments approach online poker exactly as would be expected – to prevent gambling addiction and gambling on credit. One amendment requires that online poker sites put into place technology that allows players to put loss limits into place. This is not the first time that limits have been used by major companies to combat addiction. Blizzard Entertainment, the company responsible for the popular MMORPG World of Warcarft, squashed parental law suits after their inclusion of time limiting software that parents could use to block their children from excessive online video game play.
As recently reported by EGaming, PokerStars has acquired Gabi Campos as their new CEO while retaining the founders of the company – father and son Isai and Mark Scheinberg as Chief Technical Officer and Chairman of the Board, respectively. This acquisition is a result of a recent expressed desire by the Scheinburgs to restructure upper management in order to discover fresh ideas and help PokerStars stay at the top of the online poker world. Although Campos is not scheduled to officially take on the role of PokerStars CEO until October of this year, he has apparently begun working with the poker company in a consulting role to prepare for his official position.
Accorded to a Mark Scheinberg memo, both he and his father Isai will still retain close involvement in the affairs and strategy of PokerStars and are not planning any other restructuring in an effort to retain the team that they have trusted for 10 years. Mark Scheinberg was also optimistic on Campos’ involvement with PokerStars and noted that he was excited about his potential contributions to the company and its continued success. Although information is still limited, it would appear that Campos will take over some of the former responsibilities of the Scheinbergs while assuming some new, yet undisclosed responsibilities.
The week long man hunt of escaped Australian convict Justin Grant ended last Friday at 5 p.m. Grant was apprehended outside a fast food restaurant in Idalia. However, new reports have emerged that Grant not only participated in a great deal of online poker play during his time away from prison – but posted a Facebook event inviting some of his friends to a poker game. This message formed part of an ongoing investigation by authorities to identify Grant’s whereabouts and eventually led to his uneventful arrest. According to reports on the scene, Grant immediately surrendered after he was approached by police.
Grant originally slipped away from authorities while being treated from an apparently self inflicted hand injury at a Townsville hospital. While many are now dubbing Grant the “Facebook Fugitive,” many in the online poker world are stunned at the boldness of the escaped 21 year old male and question whether his invitation to a poker game on Facebook – and indeed all activity on the social networking site – was actually performed by Grant himself.
