Hansen Down $1 Million in Single Week

It appears that Gus Hansen’s early-2011 hot streak has finally come to a definitive end. Before last week, the Great Dane was positive by almost $4.7 million for the year, making him the most dominant high stakes online player of 2011 by a huge margin. Recent losses make his position far more precarious.

In April’s first week, Hansen engaged in just over 8,500 hands of high stakes poker, primarily consisting of 6-Max PLO at the $300 / $600 stake level. His competitors for the week included some of the biggest names in online poker, such as gavz101, Tom Dwan and NoPasaran.

Hansen never found his groove in those games, nor did he succeed in a series of heads up sessions against the now-hottest player in online poker, Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond. Galfond managed to take hundreds of thousands of dollars from Hansen over the course of last week.

Although Hansen was poker’s biggest winner in the first two months of the year, and nearly managed to repeat the feat in March, he is now negative by $970k for April.

This isn’t the first time that Hansen has squandered such success. He was positive by $2 million in the first months of 2010, but lost it all and more during the summer.

Despite his disturbing losses, Hansen remains the most successful player of 2011 with $3 million to his name. His margin of victory is dwindling, however, with Dan “Jungleman12″ Cates currently reporting earnings of $2 million. Cates was 2010′s biggest winner, scoring $5.5 million.

Scott “URnotINdanger2″ Palmer a week that looked like a polar opposite of Hansen’s. Although he’s struggled throughout 2011, he played roughly 1,950 hands last week to earn a whopping $612k. Other success stories for the week included Patrik Antonius (up $267k), bixiu (up $352k), FinnishNightmare (up $395k) and Lance84 (up $412k).
