March in Review: Galfond Earned More Than Hansen

Anyone who has been following Gus Hansen’s utter domination of the high stakes online poker world in recent months may be quite surprised to learn this fun fact: Phil Galfond earned more than Hansen in March.

Hansen is by far the most successful player of the year, and was the biggest money winner in both January and February. Hansen looked to have the deal sealed for March as well until a late-month session against Phil “OMGClayAiken” Galfond lost him the top spot.

Galfond’s margin of victory was incredibly slim at only $50,000, but it was enough for the Cardrunners founder to dethrone The Great Dane, a Full Tilt Poker pro. Galfond’s month is even more impressive when you consider that he entered it down by $1.1 million in 2011. He’s now positive for the year by $600k.

Hansen and Galfond were trailed by a handful of other extremely successful players last month, including fellow Full Tilt pro Phil Ivey and online phenom Dan “jungleman12″ Cates.

The biggest losers in March read like a who’s-who of fan favorites, with popular names like Viktor “Isildur1″ Blom and Tom “durrrr” Dwan topping the list of the unfortunate few.

Biggest Online Poker Winners in March:

Phil Galfond: up $1.75 million
Gus Hansen: up $1.7 million
Phil Ivey: up $901,000
Gavin Cochrane (gavz101): up $816,000
Dan Cates: up $747,000

Many online poker fans may be surprised to find Phil Ivey so high on the list. This could be due to the fact that Ivey only recorded fewer than 4,500 hands in March. That’s less than Blom, for instance, typically records in a single night.

Biggest Losers:

Scott Palmer (URnotINdanger2): down $990,000
Tom Dwan: down $907,000
Viktor Blom: down $888,000
FishosaurusREX: down $685,000
Kagome Kagome: down $597,000
