New World Series of Poker Event: Rematches

The 2011 edition of the World Series of Poker will include a brand new event entitled WSOP Rematches. A total of three Rematch events are scheduled, including Chris Moneymaker versus Sammy Farha, Johnny Chan versus Phil Hellmuth, and a third event in which the competitors have yet to be announced.

The purpose of WSOP Rematches is to provide repeats of some of the most famous and exciting heads up battles to ever occur in the World Series of Poker Main Event. The Rematches will use a best of three format. Currently, the matches are scheduled for Thursday, June 2nd, with the match between Farha and Moneymaker planned to occur first.

In the first round of a Rematch, players will begin with the exact same chip stacks they possessed when their original heads up match began. The second round will see the chip stacks reversed, with each player starting with their opponent’s original chip stack. If one of the competitors win both rounds, the event is declared over. However, matches with a tied score following the second round will enter a third round, in which both players will start with equal chip stacks.

The events are intended to recapture the magic that occurred when Chris Moneymaker became the Main Event champion in 2003. This single event is often cited as a turning point in professional poker, and a major reason why the game is so visible, even in traditional sports media outlets, today. At the time, Moneymaker was a total unknown, and there was hardly anyone who expected Moneymaker to beat Farha, a significantly more well-known poker pro with experience to mach. Moneymaker did exactly that, and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Hellmuth/Chan match will be repeat of their legendary 1989 heads up duel in which Chan was seeking his third straight Main Event bracelet. Instead, Hellmuth won, earning his very first WSOP bracelet while simultaneously becoming the youngest WSOP Main Event champion at the time.

You can vote for the competitors in the third Rematch event by visiting the WSOP Facebook page.
