WSOP Player of the Year award to use BLUFF formula

After last year’s outcries that the World Series of Poker Player of the Year voting system needed an overhaul when Mike “The Grinder” Mizrachi failed to win the POY award despite a monster 2010 WSOP, the WSOP looked toward the Bluff Magazine POY formula for their inspiration. In fact the new WSOP POY system will be a modified version of the Bluff formula –minus the carry-over from the previous year.

The new WSOP formula now takes into account the buy-in, field-size, and of course where a player finishes to determine the amount of points they will earn in 54 preliminary WSOP tournaments as well as the seven WSOP Europe tournaments –the only tournaments exempt are any exclusionary events such as the Casino Employee tournament, the Ladies tournament, and the Seniors tournament.

“It’s been obvious that our Player of the Year system needed a little bypass surgery,” WSOP Vice President Ty Stewart told Bluff Magazine. ”BLUFF’s new POY format has been lauded by players as the best and most complete in the industry, so they were natural partners to help us tweak our model. We look forward to watching the excitement play out across all 62 open bracelet events.”

The Main Event of the WSOP has also been increased in importance in determining the Player of the Year. According to Bluff Magazine: “The winner of the Main Event will automatically earn 500 POY points, the runner-up 350 with the bottom 50% of those who cashed earning 25 points.”
